Trinity welcomed Rev. Doug McMunn and his family from Michigan in the USA, at the end of June for a five-week exchange with our minister Rev. Val Spencer and her husband Chris.

Following their very successful and enjoyable visit the McMunn Family sent us this letter which appeared in Forum.

Hello Forum Readers,

Wow! I am very happy we came to the BSE Circuit on a Pastoral Exchange. We have hundreds of memories to cherish always. We hope our family visit here was a blessing to you in some way. It certainly was a wonderful experience for us. We enjoyed your warm welcome and gracious hospitality.

We met many devoted Christian people in the churches and you are an inspiration to us by your prayers, service and fruits of the spirit. We are still processing the ‘takeaways’, or lessons we have learned for Arise church, but here are a few:-

We could duplicate your Christmas Tree Festival to connect with our community.

We should include a ‘Family Friendly’ seating area in our church building plans.

I loved the Open Gardens. We could create a community wide open garden plan - and personally invite our neighbours to an open garden event.

Your Church Stewards were brilliant during our stay. I appreciated their prayers, guidance, responsibility and service. I would like Arise Church to form a small team of Stewards.

After we left you we visited Germany and Paris. We saw many beautiful places but none surpassing the lovely Abbey Gardens of Bury. We shall always treasure the memory of serving God with you, living in the Manse on Well Street and making so many new friends.

We do hope to see you again. Please come and see us in Michigan.

Warmly, Doug McMunn (and Marianne, Matthew, Katie and Marsha)

Trinity 1-2-5 Celebration Dinner

What better setting in Bury St. Edmunds could have been chosen for such an event?  The Athenaeum is a historic building for a very special and historic occasion.  Nearly 150 friends old and new met together in fellowship beneath chandeliers and splendid Georgian surroundings.

It was a real pleasure to see so many of the present congregation coming together.  It was also a great delight to spot old friends across the room some more easily recognised than others.  Some people had not met for 10 or 15 years.  Others had come many miles from places as diverse as Devon and Cumbria.  It was wonderful to see again ministers and their families who have served at Trinity over the last thirty years.  Fred and Betty King, Brian and Molly Rogers, Greta Wills and our present minister Val and Chris Spencer.  Sadly missed is Tren Wills and it was unfortunate that Ian and Dorothy Wilson could not be with us.

Many tales were told and memories exchanged as we eagerly awaited the canopés, which were excellent.  The main courses of Beef Stroganoff and Creamy Chicken were beautifully complemented with beans, calabrese and parsnip and carrot puree. When asked which of the four sweets I would like I was very tempted to ask for a little of each.  I settled for the chocolate roulade though envied those who had the enormous strawberry pavlovas.  A big “thank you” to the caterers for such a splendid meal and such good value.

We were encouraged to circulate and chat to folks on other tables but many were reluctant and only the most gregarious took advantage of the suggestion.  After coffee, the entertainment by the choir with secular songs rounded off the evening in great style.  What a shame we had to be thrown out at 9.30 as there was still so much to say and so many people with whom one would like to have conversed for longer.  It was an evening for interesting and diverse conversation, reliving old memories and celebrating the achievements of Methodists in Bury St. Edmunds over the last 125 years..

On behalf of all those who enjoyed this wonderful, memorable occasion may I thank Val Matthews and all those who had a hand in its organisation.
